HomeNewcomer & International StudentsRegister for school as a newcomer How to register You can register for school as soon as you have secured a residence. We require a letter from the home owner/renter indicating that the child is living there, with a copy of the lease/mortgage. If you answer No to any of the following questions, please complete the Newcomer International Student Registration Form and reach out to the Newcomer & International Student Welcome Centre to book an appointment to register. Is your child a Canadian Citizen? Was your child born in Canada? Are both parents/guardians Canadian Citizens? Is English the primary language spoken at home? Newcomer International Student Registration Form Registration Checklist If you answer Yes to all of the questions, you can register your child directly at their zoned school. To find out which school your child will attend, please click here. Contact the school for more information about registering your child. At the appointment We will collect the required documentation and complete the registration process. We will tell you about our school district and the programming for your child, answer any questions, and schedule your child’s first day of school. The process will take approximately a half hour. You do not need to bring your child, but they are welcome to join. If you do not live near the Newcomer & International Student Welcome Centre, arrangements can be made to meet virtually. What to bring International Student Study Visa registrations Student passport (proof of age) Student birth certificate Proof of immunization records in English Student transcript (report card) in English Study Permit issued by Immigration Notarized Custodian agreement (if applicable) Proof of Medical Insurance Tuition fee in Canadian Dollars Permanent Residence, Parent Work Visa, or Parent Study Visa registrations Signed registration form (submitted when you have a permanent address). Student passport (proof of age) Student birth certificate Proof of immunization records in English Student transcript (report card) in English Landing Papers (Parents & Student) issued by Immigration ☐Notarized Custodian agreement (if applicable) Parent Letter of Attendance at University or College (if applicable). If parent is on a Study Permit, a letter of attendance will be required from the University or College once the parent begins classes. If your child has special learning needs, bring all available records, assessments, learning plans to the registration appointment with you. We will send a copy of these records to the school and the Educational Support Services team who will work with you to identify required supports for your child. Fees If the child is living with a parent/guardian who has a Work Permit, Parental Study Permit and is attending a full-time course at a designated learning institute, or Permanent Residence status, there is no tuition fee. Can my child study in NB without paying tuition fees?Newcomer and International students do not pay tuition fees if the parent has a Work Permit, Parental Study Permit (and is attending a full-time course at a designated learning institute) or Permanent Residence status. Specifically, there is no fee if: The child’s parent/legal guardian has a valid Work Permit issued by IRCC, valid for a term of one year or more, AND the child’s parent/legal guardian must be a resident of New Brunswick. OR The child’s parent/guardian’s Parental Study Permit is for the duration of their official course of studies and they are enrolled in a degree or diploma program at a publicly funded institution or in a degree program at a private post-secondary institution in NB. This includes: An educational institution designated under the Degree Granting Act (Yorkville University and the University of Fredericton) An educational institution, as defined in the Degree Granting Act, that is established under an Act of the Legislature (University of New Brunswick, Mount Allison University, St. Thomas University, Université de Moncton, Crandall University, Kingswood University, St. Stephen’s University, and the New Brunswick Bible Institute) An institution established or operated under the Adult Education and Training Act (e.g. New Brunswick College of Craft and Design) Maritime College of Forest Technology The Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick (CCNB) The New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) Children not living with a parent/legal guardian in NB will be required to pay tuition fees, regardless of the student status. Does my child need a Student Study Visa? Find out what a minor child needs to do to study in Canada if they’re not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident here. How much are tuition fees?$18,011.00 CND for September 2023-June 2024. There is also a registration fee of $250 CND. Schools also have a small yearly fee to cover materials and activities. Students registering with an International Student Study Visa will be required to pay tuition. Conditional Letter of Acceptance Families can request a conditional letter of acceptance through the Newcomer & International Student Welcome Center. We will require an application fee of $250 CND as well as a completed Newcomer International Student Registration Form. Learning supports Students are placed in a grade based on their age level, and appropriate supports are provided for special needs and English language learning. Your child’s English language skills will be assessed once they are in school. English as an Additional Language support will be provided, if required, by EAL teachers at your child’s school. If your child has special learning needs, bring all available records, assessments, and learning plans to the registration appointment with you, so that we can identify required supports for your child. Frequently Asked Questions Registration How old does my child have to be to register for Kindergarten?Children must be five years old before the end of December to be eligible to start school in September of that calendar year We will be arriving after the school year has begun. Is there a deadline for registration?You can register your child for school as soon as you arrive and have an address in the community. We offer continuous enrollment and register new students throughout the school year. I will not be living with my child when they are studying. Do you make homestay arrangements?Any student wishing to study in ASD-S who will not be living with a parent will be referred to Atlantic Education International (AEI). AEI supports 11-18 year olds from around the world who wish to come for an English-language Immersion experience in a public school for one semester, the full year, or a 4 to 12 week stay through the New Brunswick International Student Program (NBISP). We do not arrange homestays. AEI is the only agent authorized by the Department of Education and Early Childhood to provide this service. Documentation Do I need to translate all the documents into English?All documents must have English translation for registration. Translations must be certified by a professional. What does “proof of address” mean?If you are renting an apartment or house, you can bring your lease agreement. If you own your home, you can bring your NB Property Tax Assessment or a copy of your Purchase and Sale Agreement. Or, you can provide a recent utility bill or statement with your name and address on it. If a student is already enrolled in a school and the parent’s immigration status changes, does the student have to leave school?Children who are already enrolled in schools will not be withdrawn from school while their parent/legal guardian is dealing with immigration matters, provided they submit supporting documentation that they are in a transitional period (e.g. changing status from Temporary Foreign Worker to Permanent Resident or Study permit, etc.) Other cases will be dealt with on a case by case basis. School Placement What school will my child attend?Your child’s school will be assigned based on where you live. If a grade level or school is at capacity, your child might be temporarily placed in a different nearby school. Transportation will be arranged for the student by the school district if your child is placed in another school that is more than 1.5 km from your residence. What grade will my child go into?Students are placed based on birthdate and will normally be placed in their age appropriate grade level. Grade K 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 Age 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 Is transportation to school available?Yes, students who live more than 1.5 km from their school are eligible for transportation. Parents are responsible for the safety of their children to and from the school bus stop. Parents of children in Kindergarten to Grade 2 are required to escort their children to/from the bus stop. Check to see if your child is eligible for busing. Parents of children in Kindergarten to Grade 2 are required to escort them to/from school if they live less than 1.5 km from the school.
