Transition to Kindergarten HomePrograms and ServicesTransition to Kindergarten Overview A number of pre-kindergarten events are planned for families and their child the year before kindergarten. These events are designed to ensure children have a pleasant transition from home to school. Families are encouraged to participate in all of the activities. Once your child is registered for kindergarten, you will get upcoming event reminders and invitations from your child’s new school. Events If you have questions about upcoming pre-kindergarten events, please contact your school. Kindergarten Registration (October) Registration for kindergarten opens the week following Thanksgiving each year. Registering early ensures families are invited to the pre-K transition events held throughout the year. Kick-Off to Kindergarten (October/November) Registered families will receive a link to the Kick-Off to Kindergarten video, which highlights important transition events and tips to support your child’s development including simple, fun activities to try at home. Families may also be invited to their community school for an information session regarding their child’s transition to school. EYE-DA Evaluation (Starts in October) The Early Years Evaluation – Direct Assessment (EYE-DA) is an assessment that provides leading indicator information on each child's strengths and areas for further development, to help schools and families support a positive transition to school. All children entering kindergarten have the opportunity to complete this assessment. Families will be given an appointment when registering their child for school. Children who have not had at least 3 years of English language exposure will have the opportunity to complete the Newcomer Preschool Screener and will be contacted to set up appointment. This will replace the EYE-DA for these children. Welcome to Kindergarten (January/February) Families and children are invited to attend an exciting in-person event that introduces children and families to their new school community. Both children and guardians will take part in hands-on activities designed to build skills for a smooth transition to kindergarten, meet school staff, and connect with other families. Kindergarten Orientation Day (May/June) Families are invited to visit a kindergarten classroom at their school. Children will participate in activities and have the chance to discover what a kindergarten classroom is all about. While the children are visiting classrooms, guardians will attend information sessions on topics such as what a typical school day looks like and information specific to your school community. Families can enjoy a school bus ride with their child before or after the orientation session. Register for kindergarten0-5 Years Resources
