High School Registration (SJEC)

The following information applies to the Saint John Education Centre only. All other high schools in ASD-S enroll based on a student’s locally zoned school.

Choosing your high school

Every school is unique in some ways; however, students will receive a world class education in any high school in our district.

Every high school offers:

  • the required courses for the New Brunswick High School Diploma
  • additional courses dependent on local availability
  • an exceptional variety of opportunities to learn and participate in extracurricular activities, such as clubs, arts, and athletics
  • opportunities to tailor learning through distance, virtual, and independent learning
  • outstanding staff, a strong sense of pride, community, and school spirit

Students and families can make their request based on a variety of factors. To ensure a full range of programming at each high school, we must balance student enrollment across all four schools. Therefore, we may be unable to grant some requests for out-of-zone registrations.

Registration

All Grade 8 students in the Saint John Education Centre will receive a high school registration form from their homeroom teacher in January. This form will indicate what school your child is zoned for according to your current residential address on record.

Students will indicate on the form which school they are requesting to be placed in, and must submit it to their homeroom teacher by the deadline.

School placement is determined by Anglophone South School District. Families will receive a letter in the spring indicating what school their child has been registered for.

School Placement

Students who request their zoned school as their preferred choice, by the deadline, will be placed in that high school. Students zoned for both Saint John High School and St. Malachy’s Memorial High School may choose between the two.

Please note: the placement of siblings, or other family members does not affect the placement of a student.

If a high school has remaining spaces available after accommodating all in-zone students, these spaces will be filled by out-of-zone students who have requested placement there.

If the total number of students requesting out-of-zone placement exceeds the total number of available spaces in a school, then all out-of-zone registrants will be placed in a random draw to fill the remaining spaces.

Students who do not submit a form will be placed in their zoned school.  For students in the central zone, they will be placed at either Saint John High School or St. Malachy’s Memorial High School according to space availability.

Additional Placement Opportunities

Students who are not initially placed in their preferred school will remain in the random draw for that school. If a space becomes available, a student will be selected at random, and the family will be notified of the updated school placement.

If your child does not wish to be added to the draw and opts to attend their zoned school, please notify the Director of Schools.

The draw is paused over the summer break, and will briefly open again to fill any spaces that have become available over the summer. School placements will be finalized by the first week of school.

School Placement after Registration

Students who are placed out-of-zone may request to return to their zoned school in second semester in accordance with ASD-S Policy 355.

Students who move into a different zone during or after the Grade 9 registration process, will be admitted to their zoned high school if space is available.  Proof of residence will be required.

Students who move into the Saint John Education Centre after the Grade 9 registration process will be admitted to their zoned school. They may request a change of school through ASD-S Policy 355.

Please note: Students who request a change of schools to an out-of-zone school after the placement process are not eligible for transportation to that school.
